Clear-felling of mature native forest and burning the residue is a seriously carbon-intensive activity, according to a strong body of scientific evidence. Changing this practice to conserve such forests can bring economic reward. Climate change and the need to cut emissions presents us with a real problem in the context of forestry. Evidence about carbon storage by forests suggests a way out of the current forest harvesting impasse. In the developing climate crisis, food — fuel to keep us alive — has to take precedence over fuel for our machines. |
